Service Year America - Communications and Marketing Intern

Department/Cross Functional Teams: Communications, Policy & Advocacy, Digital Marketing
Washington, DC

Pay: $1500 Stipend for the Summer

A Shared Vision

Service Year Alliance believes that a service year should be a cultural expectation and common opportunity for every young American, and works everyday to realize that vision. The force of service at scale can repair broken cities, uplift and educate children at risk, and empower communities struggling with poverty. It could unite the most diverse nation in history, binding people of different backgrounds through common cause. It can inspire young Americans to serve for a year, and in the process, forge them into the leaders for life our nation needs.

Our North Star

On the path to our vision, our aim is that, within a generation, every year, one million young Americans engage in a service year, solving important problems while transforming their own lives.

Why Now: Broken Citizenship and Pressing Challenges

The need for a common experience of citizenship in our country is more poignant than ever. We are drifting apart. Contrary to the illusion of constant connectivity, Americans are isolated from one another—geographically, ethnically, economically, religiously, and culturally. There’s a chance—right now—to inspire a renewed sense of citizenship capable of solving our biggest challenges and creating the leaders our nation needs. Neither the idea of national service nor our vision are new, but this moment in time tells us they are both deeply needed and never before more achievable.

The Position

We are in search of an exceptional and eager-to-learn communications intern for the summer. As an organization that is working to inspire millions of young people to serve a year in communities across the country, we are in need of a rock star who is ready to roll up his or her sleeves and take on any communications task at hand. Whether that’s helping Service Year Alliance build up our new brand and develop our new social media channels or writing letters to the editor and pitching local stories to increase congressional funding for service years in Appropriator districts — our communications intern’s role is critical to reaching our organization’s vision and goals.

Responsibilities:

--Monitor relevant news and maintain existing and new social media accounts, with an eye for using platforms like Snapchat and Facebook Live
--Lead a new creative writing and content creation campaign for our blog
--Assist with our FY17 budget and 2016 presidential campaign local press efforts
--Assist our digital marketing team with social media analytics, including analyzing Google AdWords, Facebook Ads, etc.
--Collaborate with our Program and Movement Building teams to develop content for our newsletters to organizations and coalition members
--Coordinate with our Graphic Designer to develop creative infographics, logos, etc.

Requirements:

--Belief in service years to tackle pressing challenges, transform the lives of those who service, and change the course of our country
--Humble leader with tremendous professional resolve
--Comfort with ambiguity
--Bias for taking initiative to create and own new opportunities
--Strong learning mindset
--1-2 years of experience working or interning in communications and/or marketing (political campaign experience, Hill experience, or nonprofit experience preferred)
--Exceptional writing experience, with an eye for creative and compelling content
--Expertise developing content for and/or managing social media accounts in a professional capacity
--A political mindset with a basic understand of the legislative process preferred
--A tendency to continually test, measure, report and analyze
--Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and/or InDesign a plus
