Would Space Cowboy Have Been a Better Choice?

Americans for Informed Democracy seeks an Executive Director with managerial/leadership experience, confident & optimistic outlook, and political savvy. Familiarity with international relations, US foreign policy, and solidarity work also desirable. Apply by July 17.

We’ve not previously featured any jobs with engineering & construction giant Bechtel – that changes with these two Fredrick, Md.-based postings (search using reference number):
The super-sized (800 lawyers in 13 offices) Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP will make a little room for a new Director of Communications who can successfully lead communications efforts for the firm and core practice areas and lift the firm’s visibility, credibility and reputation.

mCapitol Management/MWH is looking for a Legislative Assistant (search req ID 743BR or DC location) to provide administrative assistance, legislative research, and advocacy back-up for two Republican senior members of the firm. Hill experience (intern-level OK) desirable.

Several lonely desks await new masters at the Carnegie Endowment for World Peace:
The National Association of Manufacturers would like to engage a Strategic Writer to produce and edit various communications vehicles. Successful hire will also oversee editorial calendar for publications and create a “journalistic process” for materials development.

We don’t want you to miss this excellent Social Media Editor/Producer (search via link) opportunity with Powell Tate that we originally previewed here. Three-to-five years of relevant digital communications experience and strong knowledge of social media are among your qualifications.

Here’s one that is outside our usual orbit of public affairs opportunities, but some of the same relevant communications and outreach skillsets would surely apply to the Director of Economic Development position with the progressive city government of Portsmouth, Va. Bonus intel: while the previous listing references a “negotiable” salary, this Yahoo! HotJobs version notes a $71k-$97k pay range.

Global research-based messaging and communications consultants Penn, Schoen & Berland list openings for individuals with strong research and analytical skills:
Free Press, the self-declared largest media reform organization in the US, is seeking a Media Director to oversee a wide range of communications activities. They would like to add your sense of humor and can-do attitude to their hard-working, fun-loving, creative and collaborative workplace.

Zero prostate cancer deaths. Zero prostate cancer cases and for those with prostate cancer: zero PSA. Zero tolerance for prostate cancer. We’re in favor of all of that, so we hope you’ll do an extra-good job as Communications Director for the crew at ZERO: The Project to End Prostate Cancer.

Are you interested, qualified, or just curious enough to take a look at these slots with the Inter-American Development Bank? Spanish and/or Portuguese language skills appear desirable:
Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping, into the future … surely the Steve Miller Band was thinking of the fast-approaching July 9 deadline to apply for the Communications and Policy Program Manager opening with the Dept. of Defense/Human Resources Activity unit. $96k-$120k – job ID DHRA-09-268714 – and we bear no responsibility if you have Fly Like an Eagle in your head the rest of the afternoon.

We’re not trying to get rid of all of you – just a few of you. Specifically, we’d like to send someone to Boston, Mass. as Director of Communications for the Conservation Law Foundation. Transportation and Environmental Justice Advocate and other closer-to-the-Sox jobs and internships also available.

Do you have a Masters degree in Education, Social Services, Public Administration or related degree? How about a minimum 5 years experience in abstinence education and/or positive youth development; or federal programs involving youth and family serving organizations? This Project Director opening with the National Abstinence Clearinghouse might be your thing, then.

A broad range of admin tasks, assignments, duties and responsibilities await the Assistant to the Managing Director, Pew Center on the States with the Pew Charitable Trusts. This is not an entry-level admin job; a minimum of five years experience, preferably assisting exec/management types, is required.

Can you tell me - just how important, or "good" is networking? I've been an editor (magazines, association, books, ad agency) for the past 12 years (just laid off) and really don't know what kind of value there is in networking. And just HOW would I go about doing it, if I'm really only interested in continuing to be an editor? Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

Hey M. - my short answer is this: network in a way that makes you feel comfortable and authentic. You can define what your version of networking is and what works for you. For some people, it's going out of their way to meet new people in a specific industry face to face; for others, it's touching base with former colleagues and peers and letting them know your situation and asking for advice or leads.

I'm not a job search expert, but I think it's important unless you think your resume/experience is so strong that you'll garner enough interest simply answering job ads and standing out among the (literally) hundreds of applications many jobs receive.

I'm happy to talk about this further - feel free to email me; contact info can be found under view my profile at lower right on main page (scroll down).

Hope this (and DCPA+CJ in general) is helpful.
