The Civil Air Patrol is run by all volunteers, and they could use a few more to work on public affairs activities. They are especially in search of a sharp grant writer, along with assistance with a monthly YouTube newscast, event marketing, and garnering greater media coverage. You can find a very helpful public affairs contact here if you're interested in volunteering.

In addition to the expiring-today jobs referenced in our Sunday post below, the Treasury Dept.’s Office of Financial Stability also needs to fill desks for:
The Association of American Medical Colleges has a fairly fresh (posted Apr. 28) Senior Media Relations Specialist opening. Daily contact with health/science/medical national and trade press, as well interfacing with as with internal and stakeholder audiences, is among chief responsibilities. Demonstrated skills in media relations, including pitching ability, are sought – along with internet savvy and top-notch writing.

The Census Bureau’s Media Specialist opportunity comes with a couple strings attached – a possible Sept. 2010 term limit, along with an applicant boundary of DC and Montgomery/Prince George’s counties. Pay range: $60k-$95k, job ID 23-09-D10-239, apply by May 15.

The British American Security Information Council wants your resumes in the hopper by “midday” (Noon? When sun is at highest point? When they get back from lunch? Or high tea?) on June 1 for their Program Director, Washington Office position. They’ll pay you somewhere between $64k-$75k, and you’ll develop good working relationships with policy makers, opinion-shapers, and the media with the aim of promoting BASIC's work and positions.

Opportunities to play defense for the Defenders of Wildlife:
The crew at Nonprofit Staffing Solutions is trying to help a membership organization of basic scientists and physicians recruit a Media Officer on a temporary/contract basis. These mad (or pleasant – how should we know?) scientists require that you have a minimum 3-6 years of communications experience at a scientific or medical related institution/organization, p.r. agency, and/or background as a science or medical journalist.

PFLAG (Parents, Families, & Friends of Lesbians & Gays) has Director of Communications and Development Coordinator slots to fill - note: pdf/hybrid links that gave my ancient and crotchety computer some mild difficulty.

Preferred Systems Solutions style themselves as a recognized leader in providing information technology, engineering services, program management and consulting services. They would like to procure a Communications Specialist III to garner some extra recognition for their government and commercial clients. You’ll need to be able to achieve Secret level clearance to be invited into their Ft. Belvior fortifications on a permanent basis. Search here (Virginia location) if previous link is unhelpful.

The Maryland Institute College of Art is looking for a temporary Media Relations Writer/Publicist to assist with efforts to increase MICA’s reputation as a national leader in art and design higher education. So – how temporary, and why? Perhaps this snippet will give you a clue of what has transpired: MICA’s Office of Communications is undergoing significant changes as it prepares for new leadership and the development of a new strategic effort to expand greatly external awareness of MICA and its impact on art and design locally, regionally and nationally. This position offers an opportunity to participate in this transitional planning. Baltimore location.

An unknown Rockville operation is looking for Media Buyer & PR Manager to promote jewelry events by creating and expediting media plans; negotiating and monitoring media contracts and expenses. Female-focused media (we’re too lazy to come up with a Lifetime movie title here, but that cliché is pretty tired, anyways) includes print, radio, tv, internet and grass roots. $32k-$42k pay grade noted.

The Vane Brothers Company, boasting of more than 110 years of maritime excellence, is seeking a full-time Communications Specialist of the professional, flexible and extremely dependable variety, presumably to help them boast a little more. However, be aware that we could not find this Baltimore-based opportunity replicated among the shoreside offerings on their careers page.

Zurich of North America
is in search of an Assistant Vice President of Federal Affairs for the usual gamut of public affairs, lobbying, regulatory, and political-oriented activities. Advanced degree in relevant field strongly preferred (e.g. law, public admin, govt., etc). Your potential future Swiss overlords also have an Executive Assistant position in their government affairs operation that they describe as a fantastic opportunity.

Three or more years of project management experience? Excellent written and oral communication skills? Ability to work independently and as part of a team to effectively manage several projects simultaneously? If you’re nodding your head, you should lay claim to the Projects Manager position at the Propane Education and Research Council. And by lay claim, we mean send them a very nice letter, spiffy resume, and all the other info they desire.

Director of New Media
sounds like a pretty sweet title, and the Center for Community Change sounds like a worthwhile social justice non-profit group. One part of the job is helping oversee experimental approaches to increasing the size and loyalty of their donor base.
