Geeks Bearing Gifts

Friday's edition brings you public affairs and communications jobs from Park Avenue to the land of South Park, along with jargon aplenty, special investigations, cesspools, 420 enthusiasts, informatics, Environics, Brits, Patriots, and even Geeks bearing internship gifts. Enjoy.

AIPAC is looking for a Senior Political Analyst to track Senate & House races, along with national political trends – and to produce related reports, briefings and materials.

Female undergrads with an interest in technology policy should not miss this very-cool-sounding Public Policy Intern opportunity sponsored by the Women’s High Tech Coalition, Geek Squad, and Best Buy. They are looking in particular for female students who are passionate about science and technology, and want to work on related public policy and learn more about Capitol Hill. A $3,000 stipend is offered for this full-time, two-month assignment – applications due May 6.

Our pals at Paradigm Staffing have provided a pair of promising and proximate PR postings:
  • Small, independent, consumer & technology agencyAccount Director – Managing their consumer team and work with a mix of A-level and start-up clients. Family-friendly environment, some telecommuting possible.
  • Independent, multiple office tech PR firmAccount Exec or Sr. Account Exec – Opportunity to work on well-known clients in the enterprise software and government technology clients. Voted one of the best agencies to work for and lots of opportunity for growth.
  • They also have opportunities in San Francisco, New York & Salt Lake City
The DC office of New York based financial services firm Marwood Group seeks candidates for an Energy Policy Analyst position. Congressional staff or relevant executive branch staff experience preferred.

What would Friday & DCPA+CJ be without a couple of jargon-heavy and borderline-indecipherable opportunities from the gang at the World Bank?
  • Practice Leader, External Relationships – sample verbiage: Develop and manage a comprehensive and strategic long-term partnerships strategy with regional and national centers of excellence (delivery partners), and with multilateral and bilateral donor partners (resource partners). – apply by Apr. 29
  • Practice Manager, Governance – sample verbiage: Guide staff in developing learning programs in governance that emphasize practical knowledge on the ‘how’ of reform, using instruments such as practitioner knowledge exchanges, peer networks, and delivery of programs through regional partnerships. Facilitate multistakeholder consensus building. – apply by Apr. 26
The American Medical Informatics Association wants this CV: one-to-three years experience using web technologies; electronic and print design skills including an interest in seeking out new and emerging web technologies. Also excellent writing and proofreading skills with the ability to manage multiple and shifting priorities and projects under pressure of tight deadlines. The job in question? Interactive Communications Coordinator.

The Ultimate Players Association – the national governing association of this ever-popular disc-based sport – is looking for an Executive Director (note: pdf link) to run the operation and grow the game. You’ll have to relocate to the beer- and bud-friendly burg of Boulder, CO, however. Pay is in the $80k-$95k range, which should allow you to keep plenty of this in your fridge. Apply by Apr. 30.

Environics Communications is on the hunt for Account Execs and/or Senior Account Execs (scroll down) – 4-8 years experience, preferably of the agency variety, and the always-relevant PR skill-sets (communications skills, initiative, & multi-task ability) are sought.

How about a job that offers a bit of the pleasant and cheerful* academic lifestyle and the challenge of communications/PR work? Specifically, Director of Marketing & Communications with George Mason University. Among your many duties: strategic long-term planning and overall management of the school's brand across all programs and multiple communications platforms (publications, websites, promotional materials and events). Apply by May 15.

The British are hiring! The British are hiring! Spread the word to every Fairfax village and Glover Park farm – our special relationship BFFs from across the Atlantic have these opportunities at the British Embassy in DC:
Neat-sounding-title alert: Director of Web Communications and Special Investigations with the NAACP, in Baltimore. This journalistic-oriented position is responsible for assigning, editing and producing original content across multiple platforms such as web, film, print and audio relating to domestic human and civil rights abuses and other areas aligned with the NAACP’s mission.

Fleishman-Hillard is in search of a Vice President for their New York-based CPR Worldwide global healthcare subsidiary. You may be Manhattan-bound if you are organized, creative, and have a minimum of 8-10 years of large agency experience in developing and implementing PR programs specifically related to health and pharma products – along with a experience managing major media programs and a proven track record of success in securing placements.

The Manhattan Institute would be happy to lure some sharp young conservative from the swampy cesspool by the Potomac to the less-swampy cesspool on the Hudson to serve as Managing Editor for a passel of publications and reports. Writing, editorial work, production oversight, and the always-fun duty of deadline-enforcement are part of the package.

And, for our final Gotham diversion – the Asia Society is looking for a candidate with characteristics including: visionary, exceptional, creative, organized, energetic and enthusiastic. Surely these plaudits don’t apply to you – but maybe you know someone who would be a good fit for their Vice President, Communications (note: pdf link) offering. Park Avenue offices, probably swank.

The Center for Community Change is a national social justice non-profit organization founded in 1968 to honor the life and values of Robert F. Kennedy. They have created a new post – Director of Organizational Initiatives – to develop strategic directions and priorities, manage organization-wide initiatives; build and maintain external relations, and work on governance-related issues. They’re also ISO a Senior Legislative Associate for all things policy-advocacy-legislative.

Perhaps we were motivated by the previously-mentioned Special Investigations gig – because we did some digging on this Executive Assistant to the CEO job with an anonymous non-profit – and we think (not sure, but some strong indications) it might just be this group. Pay is $43-$48k range.

As some of today’s job offerings are of the far-flung variety, we’ll close the week nominating a distant kindred spirit as Friday’s job search resource – Andrew Hudson’s Job List, focusing on the Rocky Mountain region, features a lot of excellent PR/communications jobs and resources in that area – and he’s likely too professional to adopt the tagline we'd like to suggest for his operation: Things to Do in Denver When You’re Fired. But seriously, Andrew's site is truly great – on a scale of Baldwin, he’s an Alec, we’re a Billy.

* As always, not a guarantee.

They plan to start reviewing applications on May 15 to fill the Director, Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics (search position number F9230z) job at George Mason University. So start building the case that you have the established academic and/or health policy career background, along with experience in public health policy at the state- or federal-level. But don’t bother without having a doctoral degree (of the earned and not honorific variety, mind you).

We know it sounds counter-intuitive, but you don’t have to be the very best applicant to snare an International Policy Analyst position with the Center for Clean Air Policy – that’s because they’re looking to hire two or three of you. But you will need to possess a keen sense of the post-2012 international climate debate, understand political and jurisdictional issues that are at the heart of finding consensus-based solutions in the EU, and have similar experience developing GHG-related policy.

The Ashai Shimbun (circulation: 8,000,000) will pay $33k-$36k to secure services of a News Assistant/Economics. Japanese language is helpful but not required.

Winning hire will create and implement business policies, processes, and procedures to ensure an exemplary level of data integrity. We love data integrity.*

Here’s one that would have fit right in with yesterday’s lobbyist/government relations issue: Director of Government Relations with the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates – an organization of attorneys, advocates, parents, and others dedicated to protecting educational rights of children with disabilities. Must be able to telecommute and work flexibly and independently via internet from a home office in the DC area.

The Design-Build Institute of America is seeking a Vice President of Advocacy and External Affairs to maximize the messaging clarity, impact and positioning of design-build project delivery – like this guy is doing.

The Loudoun Education Foundation raises funds in the private sector to support programs for students and teachers in the Loudoun County Public Schools that are not underwritten by tax dollars. How about serving as their Executive Director, on a part-time basis, for $15k a year?

Today’s job-search tool – the Union Jobs Clearinghouse – bringing you opportunities with labor organizations in DC and around the country.

Now Boarding, Gate 5

First – from the department of correction and reassessment – we take another look our smirking Wednesday footnote pointing out that this Senior Policy Analyst job with the Office of Financial Stability was posted on Good Friday, April 10 - and closes April 15. Sounds to us like the OFS Team already has somebody in mind for the position.

Our DCPA+CJ publicity-attack machine alerted some journalist/blogger types to this perceived chicanery – and Ed O’Keefe, cheerful tyro of the Washington Post Federal Eye, somewhat defused our petty outrage, letting us know that because OFS has "direct hire authority …. they don't even have to post the jobs on USAJobs.gov." He adds that very few gov't programs have ever been given such leeway, but that "OFS is nonetheless posting some of the positions in hopes of exposing the positions to a wider, perhaps talented, applicant pool" – even though they are getting few if any qualified applicants though that channel.

While we still think the posting period in this case is curiously brief, our predilection for cynicism and conspiracy is lessened (just this once) by Mr. O’Keefe. And, we’d just as well see the OFS cabal succeed, anyways – so please, get those applications in for this newly-posted high-profile offering:
Now, on to some great opportunities – including a few of the off-beat variety – to wrap up your job-seek week.

The American Enterprise Institute is seeking a full-time Research Assistant (scroll down) to work with a conservative senior fellow in AEI’s economics department. Responsibilities will include policy research; writing/editing policy statements & op-eds; and organizing seminars, conferences & meetings. Government Relations Associate and other 2009 grad opportunities also noted.

Some of you may already know that LinkedIn has a jobs board. Here’s a couple relevant public relations jobs that we found there:
International RAM Associates, provider of security and transportation-related services to airports, airlines and the US Government has a boarding pass awaiting a new Strategic Communications Manager at their Crystal City offices. Aviation industry outreach experience is desired.

Surely this is a dream job for one of you folks out there – Promotions Coordinator (part time) for the DC-area activities of The Onion. A passion for The Onion and its various brands and superb knowledge of the city's cultural scene are among the hurdles for this $10/hr. gig. Promo jobs and internships in other locales are also noted.

The Civil Air Patrol is combing their membership ranks to find a Public Affairs Team Leader – a volunteer position. Here’s a pdf link with more info.

Charles Krauthammer – columnist of the conservative and widely-syndicated variety – is looking for a Research Assistant for a year or two’s service.

The Airline Owners and Pilots Association want someone to help elevate their presence to the aviation industry and the general public, with particular emphasis on convention/meeting related activities. That someone would be their next (first?) Director of Strategic Outreach Planning.

And yet another aviation-related opportunity today: Airports International Council, North America seeks Vice President, Communications and Marketing, to direct communications activities in support of legislative/regulatory objectives and enhancement of association’s image.

Do you possess campaign experience (such as grassroots, organizing, legislative, electoral, or public relations campaigns) and a working knowledge of VAN, Catalyst and Excel software systems? If so, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union wants to talk to you about their Strategic Targeting Coordinator opportunity.

It’s enough to drive us to drinking – we couldn’t find this purported Director, Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration job with the District of Columbia through their HR website. Pay is $103k-$154k, if you’re still interested in chasing it down.

The crew at Marchex style themselves as leaders in the local search and performance advertising field. They’re in hiring mode for:
Optimal Solutions is an economic and policy analysis research and consulting firm with offices in the Baltimore-Annapolis-Washington, DC area. They note a dozen-plus opportunities available, mostly in the healthcare policy/research field.

Grassroots Enterprise (name says it all, we think) is looking for a Chief Operating Officer to help keep the trains – or at least the employees – running on time. Significant experience leading finance and operations in a consulting or professional services organization is desired.

Google analytics tells us that we even pull in visitors from the Great White North on occasion. This one’s for you: Market 2 World Communications is in search of a Communications Strategist (smart, stellar, fun, high-energy, inventive) to join their team based in Almonte, Ontario.

The Greater Washington Sports Alliance needs a good sport to serve as Program Coordinator to support executive, communications, development and event activities. Surely you’ll score some free tix as part of the experience.

The career center of the National Council of Nonprofits is Friday’s job seeker resource – featuring diverse opportunities in the DC area and around the country.
