I Was a Teenage Butter Intern

We’ll start Friday off with two deadline-is-coming-fast opportunities. First off, the Columbia Association (Md.) seeks your application today – Jan. 30 – to be their Writer/Communications Specialist (scroll down about halfway). Responsibilities include writing, editing and proofreading messaging; assisting with event coordination; and other administrative functions, as required. Pay is in the $35k-$40k ballpark. Lots of other fitness, activity and camp-counselor/lifeguard opportunities referenced.

Also closing soon: the College Savings Plans of Maryland asks that you send in (via regular old US Postal Service stamp-and-envelope machinery) your resume for their Public Relations & Marketing Manager position by Monday, Feb. 2. I suppose you could also send it via FedEx, or even drop it off yourself at their Baltimore location. Or trust the careerbuilder.com “apply now” button. Strong PR/community relations skills and proficiency with the spoken/written word are sought.

eBay is bidding for a Senior Manager, Government Relations (search using req ID 31245BR or DC location) to manage issues related to their PayPal service: financial services, electronic money transmitting, banking, credit, privacy areas, and others. Among their wants: 8-10 years extensive experience in financial services government relations, public policy and regulatory processes. Maybe they’ll check your feedback rating, too.

Boat People SOS is seeking an Advocacy Coordinator to work simultaneously on several primary projects: human trafficking, religious freedom, immigration reforms, citizenship for Amerasians, and more. This sounds like truly worthwhile work – and, it’ll probably look pretty great on a law school application.* More on BPSOS, via their still-under-construction website.

“This is a one-year term position. Renewal of the position is subject to management discretion and the availability of funds” – at least Oxfam America is being upfront with you about their Policy Advisor for Climate Change Campaign position; it’s just about the first thing you read in their ad. Their first listed responsibility for the job: leadership in developing and implementing their government affairs priorities and strategy climate change. Presumably, your own personal priorities will include doing a bang-up job and making sure you’re refunded for 2010, as well. They feature a handful of outside-DC opportunities, as well.

Computer Sciences Corporation will keep you busy until late 2010 as a Community Liaison (search using job # 09000FN or Lanham, Md. location) representing the work of a high-visibility US Census site in Essex, Maryland. Community relations, media coordination, and internal communications will be main components of your busy workdays.

Even if you’re not interested in becoming the next Public Relations Manager for the good folks of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, I suggest you check out their ad description - it features a really long list of desired personal attributes (aka: scope and depth of non-technical knowledge), tells you who your “coach” will be at ASHA, and even gives a very specific salary range: $75,240 - $83,600.

The Agricultural Retailers Association seeks a Director of Communications & Marketing to be responsible for executing the overall strategic communications plan for ARA. You’ll also produce a newsletter and monthly magazine, website updates, news releases, annual reports, and other promotional materials – all the while maintaining/building key media relationships.

How about a Journalism Fellowship, courtesy of the Phillips Foundation? You’ll work on projects with the potential to be published sequentially in a periodical or as a book – and get somewhere between $25k-$75k for your efforts. Applications are due Mar. 2.

Not DC-based, but you’ll apparently be at least visiting our fair Capitol as a Government Relations Intern (search using ID 4726BR or Internship category) for Land o’ Lakes (as in, butter, etc.). Duties include coordinating LOL’s participation at the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives conference in DC, and scheduling grassroots activities here, as well. Otherwise, it looks like you’ll be hanging in Arden Hills, MN.

I took me forever (ok, just several minutes, but still) to track down this link to the Government Affairs Assistant job with the American Psychiatric Association (note: pdf link) – perhaps you’ll be more effective and efficient in administrative and lobbying-related activities, including work on their Advocacy Day. They’re also looking for a tech-savvy Web Master/Web Developer.

Our job-searcher’s resource to close out this media-heavy week – media and other communications jobs from MinOnline.

* I realize that sounds cynical – I don't mean it that way. But, looking at the issues covered in that job, it really struck me as something that would impress a future employer or admissions office.
