I Was a Teenage Butter Intern

We’ll start Friday off with two deadline-is-coming-fast opportunities. First off, the Columbia Association (Md.) seeks your application today – Jan. 30 – to be their Writer/Communications Specialist (scroll down about halfway). Responsibilities include writing, editing and proofreading messaging; assisting with event coordination; and other administrative functions, as required. Pay is in the $35k-$40k ballpark. Lots of other fitness, activity and camp-counselor/lifeguard opportunities referenced.

Also closing soon: the College Savings Plans of Maryland asks that you send in (via regular old US Postal Service stamp-and-envelope machinery) your resume for their Public Relations & Marketing Manager position by Monday, Feb. 2. I suppose you could also send it via FedEx, or even drop it off yourself at their Baltimore location. Or trust the careerbuilder.com “apply now” button. Strong PR/community relations skills and proficiency with the spoken/written word are sought.

eBay is bidding for a Senior Manager, Government Relations (search using req ID 31245BR or DC location) to manage issues related to their PayPal service: financial services, electronic money transmitting, banking, credit, privacy areas, and others. Among their wants: 8-10 years extensive experience in financial services government relations, public policy and regulatory processes. Maybe they’ll check your feedback rating, too.

Boat People SOS is seeking an Advocacy Coordinator to work simultaneously on several primary projects: human trafficking, religious freedom, immigration reforms, citizenship for Amerasians, and more. This sounds like truly worthwhile work – and, it’ll probably look pretty great on a law school application.* More on BPSOS, via their still-under-construction website.

“This is a one-year term position. Renewal of the position is subject to management discretion and the availability of funds” – at least Oxfam America is being upfront with you about their Policy Advisor for Climate Change Campaign position; it’s just about the first thing you read in their ad. Their first listed responsibility for the job: leadership in developing and implementing their government affairs priorities and strategy climate change. Presumably, your own personal priorities will include doing a bang-up job and making sure you’re refunded for 2010, as well. They feature a handful of outside-DC opportunities, as well.

Computer Sciences Corporation will keep you busy until late 2010 as a Community Liaison (search using job # 09000FN or Lanham, Md. location) representing the work of a high-visibility US Census site in Essex, Maryland. Community relations, media coordination, and internal communications will be main components of your busy workdays.

Even if you’re not interested in becoming the next Public Relations Manager for the good folks of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, I suggest you check out their ad description - it features a really long list of desired personal attributes (aka: scope and depth of non-technical knowledge), tells you who your “coach” will be at ASHA, and even gives a very specific salary range: $75,240 - $83,600.

The Agricultural Retailers Association seeks a Director of Communications & Marketing to be responsible for executing the overall strategic communications plan for ARA. You’ll also produce a newsletter and monthly magazine, website updates, news releases, annual reports, and other promotional materials – all the while maintaining/building key media relationships.

How about a Journalism Fellowship, courtesy of the Phillips Foundation? You’ll work on projects with the potential to be published sequentially in a periodical or as a book – and get somewhere between $25k-$75k for your efforts. Applications are due Mar. 2.

Not DC-based, but you’ll apparently be at least visiting our fair Capitol as a Government Relations Intern (search using ID 4726BR or Internship category) for Land o’ Lakes (as in, butter, etc.). Duties include coordinating LOL’s participation at the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives conference in DC, and scheduling grassroots activities here, as well. Otherwise, it looks like you’ll be hanging in Arden Hills, MN.

I took me forever (ok, just several minutes, but still) to track down this link to the Government Affairs Assistant job with the American Psychiatric Association (note: pdf link) – perhaps you’ll be more effective and efficient in administrative and lobbying-related activities, including work on their Advocacy Day. They’re also looking for a tech-savvy Web Master/Web Developer.

Our job-searcher’s resource to close out this media-heavy week – media and other communications jobs from MinOnline.

* I realize that sounds cynical – I don't mean it that way. But, looking at the issues covered in that job, it really struck me as something that would impress a future employer or admissions office.

Today's Word: Bioinformatics

The O’Neill Institute at Georgetown University is seeking candidates for the position of Deputy Director (or search/scroll here using job ID 2009-0012R). Winning hire will have an advanced degree and relevant job experience, preferably in the area of health and international law, creative and effective problem-solving and management skills, development (fundraising) abilities, and adroitness working with faculty, government officials, and foundations.

Don’t try to ask for an extension; the National Education Association says the paper is due January 29 – your topic: why I should be NEA’s Senior Web Editor. You stand a chance of passing if you can demonstrate substantive professional media experience with general audience or advocacy website and/or electronic media, along with extensive journalism background. Spelling and punctuation probably count a bit, as well.

A DCPA+CJ semi-exclusive: Positions Inc. is seeking qualified candidates on behalf of the Online Lenders Alliance for President & CEO (no link). Three primary requirements for this position: trade association experience in an industry that has faced controversial legislative challenges; demonstrated experience implementing proactive membership recruitment/retention campaign; and solid understanding of federal/state legislative process/ability to oversee contracted lobbyists. Salary: $150k + bonus. Contact sharrington@positionsincwdc.com for more info. They would like to expedite this search, so don’t delay.

The National Academies (as in Science, Engineering, Institute of Medicine, National Research Council) are looking for a bright young type to be Assistant Editor in their Office of News and Public Information. Your bevy of assignments would include copy editing, proofreading, stock photo management, and web-related duties – along with supporting National Academies In Focus.

The US Chamber of Commerce is powering up to find a Director of Communications & Media Relations for their Institute for 21st Century Energy. To earn the low-six-figure paycheck they’re offering, the new Director will develop and execute media campaigns and proactively build press awareness for the Institute – along with a spate of press release, op-ed, speechwriting, and website management duties.

Have you the skills to:
  • Develop/implement communications strategies;
  • Publicize scholars, publications, and projects;
  • Develop and pitch story ideas;
  • Book experts on TV and radio; and,
  • Write, edit, and distribute press releases and advisories?
  • Then, posthaste, get your resume in for the Director of Communications opening with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies.
The Marine Fish Conservation Network is baiting the hook for a Media Specialist to manage all aspects of their media efforts focused on sustainable fisheries, fish populations and marine ecosystems. Three to five years experience in media relations required; experience in environmental/ biological science strongly preferred.

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy seeks a seasoned (min. 10 years work experience) admin pro to be their Executive Assistant & Board Coordinator. Among the inducements: Metro-accessible (King St.) office location, excellent salary/benefits/time-off , flexible work schedules, and allegedly dynamic/team-oriented peers.

This just missed yesterday’s media-centric offering, darn it – a Washington Post ad seeking an Online Opinion Editor for the Washington Times. Tasks there include selecting and editing original content for web site, and writing a daily "Best of the Blogs" column (for which we would shamelessly beg to be included, no doubt). We dug a little deeper, and also found it among the lengthy Times editorial position listings.

Feinstein Kean Healthcare (part of the Ogilvy PR cabal) seek an Account Supervisor/Account Director Informatics to work in support of the cool sounding and ultra-worthwhile caBIG Initiative. Those of you with at least 3-5 years of experience in public relations/communications in the Life Sciences, and/or Bioinformatics/Health IT are welcome to fight it out for this intriguing opportunity.

Investor relations is a little off our usual track, but we could not resist the assertion that you’ll never hear someone say "that’s how we’ve always done it" – that is, if you are selected as Investor Relations Analyst at Under Armour. Two-plus years of experience in IR, finance, or planning and development positions for a public company or a consulting agency, along with financial modeling skills may get you invited onto the roster there in Baltimore.

Are you someone with “significant market expertise to advise clients on the market implications of policy developments around the world?” Sure you are – and Medley Global Strategy Advisors will then make you their shiny new Market Strategist/Client Relationship Specialist. You had better be right a lot more than you’re wrong, as their clients include “sophisticated senior investment officers and major risk takers in the financial marketplace.”

GM Ryan is a professional search firm narrowly focused on the digital media industry, and they are putting their skills to work on behalf of a dynamic online advertising network start-up looking for a Director, Advertising Operations. Your resume should feature 7-10 years of professional experience, including 3-5 years in ad operations and related fields, preferably with an ad network or large advertising agency.

Ogilvy PR is in search mode for an entry-level Assistant Account Executive, Social Marketing with a degree in public relations, public health, communications or related field, and very strong (meaning: fluent) bilingual skills (Spanish-English). PR firms also tend to value folks who can meet a deadline, so I’d take their 5:00 p.m., Jan. 28 application cut-off seriously, if I were you.

We previously featured this Senior Administrative Assistant (supporting govt. affairs staff) job with the American Bankers Association. The position is still listed there, it still pays $43k-$45k, and we have no idea if they are already interviewing candidates.

The National Telecommunications Cooperative Association seeks one of those outgoing, self-motivated types, preferably with 2-4 years of congressional staff experience for the usual blend of lobbying, legislative analysis and related duties that go with a title like Government Affairs Representative.

I really like the way Novartis goes with the word “accountabilities” in their Director of Health Policy (search using DC location or job ID 38406BR) in place of the more commonly-used responsibilities or duties. Said accountabilities include: develop and carry out Novartis’ agenda on issues including Medicare Part D, Health Information Technology, health reform and the uninsured; and “own” (again, a distinctive word choice!) the Novartis relationship with CMS for Medicare Part D. Nice work, Novartis HR folks!

A veritable Shangri-La on Lee Highway: friendly, creative working environment, state-of-the art technology, and competitive salaries and benefits packages – it can be yours as a Senior Account Executive at JDG Communications. Strategic thinkers, detail-obsessives, and folks with a passion for great customer service are encouraged to apply. Speaking of obsessives – their directions/map/contact page, is, well, obsessively accurate and impressively clear. I like these people, just from looking at their website.

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs has recently posted an opportunity for a DC-based Director of Sudan Program. Successful candidate will manage overall strategy and vision for NDI's programs in Sudan and handles all aspects of program management. Position requirements include a minimum of 12 years relevant work experience in international development or related public affairs fields; Arabic language ability preferred.

Porter-Novelli has been working on a web redesign recently, and their career site is back in business. It appears the DC office is looking for a Senior Vice President, Consumer Food Business with plenty of senior-level experience and expertise. Worth noting: the job is also posted under New York, Chicago and San Francisco offices.

The American Foreign Service Association seeks an Executive Director (see word doc link) to oversee a staff of 28, manage multiple non-profit entities (a labor union, two charitable organizations, and a PAC), and provide leadership for all AFSA programs and services – also including the Foreign Service Journal.

Masters degree? Check. Two+ years experience? Got it. Arabic language skills? Solid. Ok then, you’re all set to apply for the Government Affairs Consultant position with DLA Piper. Your tasks there will include providing expertise & guidance on Lebanese & Middle Eastern government affairs, including lobbying, public relations, and economic analysis – just remember: Everything Matters to these people.

Our job searcher’s resource for today – the Good Jobs, Green Jobs conference, Feb. 4-6, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC, including a free Job Expo on Feb. 5 – see a list of exhibitors here (note: pdf file).

Three Days of the Intern

Day One - Think Tanks/NGOs - Capitol Hill & Political

With approaching deadlines for Summer 2009 internships, DCPA+CJ brings you our second intern-centric blowout: Three Days of the Intern. You'll find more than 200 intern opportunities (final number still to be determined; we're still adding new ones) – mostly in the public affairs field – posted over the next three days.

A few caveats, before we dive in:
  • We've been pulling these listings together for a couple of weeks, so it's possible a few links have been moved or deleted. Sorry for any dead ends.
  • In many cases, the link provided will take you to a main career page. This means you need to search further to find the internship (or multiple internships).
  • In a few cases, you may see outdated or incomplete info - meaning that this group hasn't updated their Summer 09 intern info yet. Of course, you could get ahead of the game by submitting your resume and cover letter early.
  • HR and intern-programming folks are more than welcome to post links to their opportunities below, or send them to me. I'll remove any posts that are spam, or not related to public-affairs internships.
  • Our first Intern Special was a simple - if extensive - alphabetical listing. For this multi-day edition, we'll be posting by organization type.
